Podcast (High Noon) : Why is our politics not political enough?

Following up on my piece for Public Discourse I was interviewed by Inez Feltscher Stepman on her podcast #highnoon hosted by Independent Women’s Forum :

Most people tend to see today’s violent political rhetoric as a sign of politicization and consequently long for the return to a more depoliticized public conversation. I understand what they mean by that, but I believe their account of the situation and of the solutions to overcome it is mistaken.

If our society is indeed polarized, and the way we address each other often cruel and violent, it is precisely because we have estranged ourselves so much from the conditions of concrete practical life and relate to each other from a place of abstraction: that of the right-bearing individual who demand the protection of those rights from institutions as a way to avoid engaging in a political relationship and conversation with others. In a paradoxical turn of events, it is the very liberal pacification that allows diverging world views to coexist which allows those who uphold them to so violently express their hostility towards one another, as if words had no consequences.
